Zeen Chin from Malaysia is one of my favorite artists, and has been for years. So when I got the opportunity to pick a pre-existing concept to sculpt in my character sculpting class, I jumped at the chance to bring one of his characters to life. Previously, I have sculpted an original character of mine, but I realized that using a pre-existing concept would leave more room to play with the sculpt instead of spending time also making a strong character design. I picked one of his SKEEN Girl concepts, as I enjoyed the relatively simple style and personality I saw within the artwork. I also thought it left room to experiment with tools I had not yet discovered within Zbrush.
The first few weeks were spent doing exploration sketches and finding relevant reference. Then, every week, I would add as much as possible to my sculpt, and applying my weekly critique notes.
This sculpture went through a production pipeline similar to that of a game asset; it was sculpted high poly in an A-pose, then retopologized to a low poly version in Maya, posed in Zbrush, textured in Substance Painter and rendered in Marmoset 3 from there.
